Why Are Diamond Bracelets Called Tennis Bracelets?

Diamond Bracelet. It's not often that a piece of jewelry is named for an accident, but such is the case with tennis bracelets. They got their unusual name from an incident involving professional tennis player Chris Evert during a match in 1987. Evert had been wearing an expensive bracelet featuring an inline string of individually-set diamonds. When the clasp snapped, she asked the officials to stop the match until the jewelry could be found. Since that day, bracelets featuring an inline array of diamonds have been called tennis bracelets.

Tennis bracelets are popular accessories for formal occasions due to their luster and sparkle. Individual diamonds (or reasonable facsimiles) are placed in square settings and then strung into a bracelet held together by a clasp. The settings and support wiring may be constructed from silver or other quality jewelry metal. The individual settings allow tennis bracelets to move comfortably while worn.

Other types of jewelry that share the form of these bracelets are referred to as tennis-style. Groups of different sized stones may be used in tennis-style bracelets, but the jewelry retains the inline look of original tennis bracelets. Classic such bracelets tend to feature a uniform arrangement of diamonds and can be very expensive.

One important element of well-constructed tennis bracelets is the safety latch. The clasp of a typical such bracelet depends on a springy metal latch meshing securely with a hook. Over time, this clasp style can become less reliable. Therefore, jewelry designers include a secondary security measure in these bracelets. The two most common styles of safety latches are chains and 'figure eights.'

The chain safety latch connects from one small stud to another on the other side of the main clasp. If the main clasp fails, the chain should hold the bracelet intact until it can be repaired. The figure eight safety latch is a small double loop of metal. One loop snaps over a small post on one side of the main clasp, while the other loop snaps over a similar post on the opposite side. Even if the main clasp separates, the figure eight loops will keep tennis bracelets from falling off.

These bracelets should be custom fitted for maximum security and comfort. Tennis bracelets which fit too loosely can become snagged and pulled. Overly snug tennis bracelets can chafe the skin and become stretched to the point of breakage. An ideal fit allows one finger to pass easily between the bracelet and wrist.

    Are Black Diamonds For You

Black Diamond. There are many different types of jewelry that can be worn and many of these are decorated with gemstones. By and large the gemstones that are set in jewelry are of a treasured and semi cherished nature. They often are of a unique stone or cut. Most of the time we are presented with stones that are very popular ones like diamonds. However, recently black diamonds have begun to make their appearance in the jewelry scene. But, have yet to take off like the standard diamond.

While these black diamonds are becoming more popular due to marketing tactics they are not seen widely nor do many people conceive having black diamonds in rings. This is likely due to the fact that the black diamonds don't have the sparkling shininess that is evident with white diamonds. We all know that most wear diamonds for the look and what others will think. As with all fancy colored diamonds the formation of black diamonds is very uncommon making this a very expensive piece of jewelry to own. This diamond comes in many shapes and sizes. This sometimes creates a challenge for people to work with and on.

Because of its uniqueness and small market share, the cost is usually much higher than the standard diamond. We all know, that in part, it goes back to supply and demand. Regardless of the cost though there are some people who like to wear these black diamonds as men's rings. This trend is very small. This could be due to the fact that many jewelers consider these black diamonds as being imperfect stones and consequently not worth the time that it would take to cut and mold them. So if you would like to wear jewelry that has black diamonds embedded in them you will have to make inquires from reputable jewelers if they have these gemstones in stock. You may find that this could pose a challenge because many jewelers just don't carry the stone.

Other than this you will likely have to look on the internet for online jewelry stores where you can purchase your black diamonds from. Word of caution, do your research diligently and feel comfortable with a company before doing business with them. Once you have found such a place and you are prepared to purchase the diamond for the going price you will need to trust that you have found a place that will sell you quality black diamond jewelry. As these types of jewelry pieces are very hard and uncommon to find you should look at the different designs that are available and see if there is one that appeals to you in spite of the price. Remember, this is not a race, take your time and make your decision wisely.

There is also another way that you can get good quality jewelry with black diamonds embedded in the design. You will need to locate a stone store that has black diamonds for sale. Having verified the caliber and seen if the cost is one that you can yield you will need to buy the quantity that you need for your design. The next step is to find a goldsmith or jewelry creator and give your design to them. This may sound like a long and arduous process, but it is well worth your time. At the end of it all you are left with a fine piece of jewelry that is custom to your liking.

You will have to trust at the end of the jewelry making process you will be the proprietor of a unparalleled piece of black diamond jewelry. To find quality jewelry takes time and to be the owner of jewelry with black diamonds means that not only should you have a discreet eye for the first-class caliber items in life but you should be prepared to pay for them as well. Black diamonds are unique and can make for a perfect gift or addition to your jewelry. When looking take your time and enjoy the process for you will be very happy with your new accessory.

    Wedding Jewelry Tips

Jewerly. A young girl spends several years of her life dreaming of her wedding day. Especially, how she would look as a bride and in this, she wants no compromise. Of course, the most important aspect is her wedding dress. It must be chosen with a lot of care. But this dress will look its best only when complimented by the proper choice of wedding jewelry. Choose your wedding jewelry with utmost care. Here we have a lot of information which is going to help you to make your choices and look your very best.

Your jewelry can help set the mood for your wedding and enhance the overall look and feel of your gown. Think and plan about whether modern jewelry, vintage jewelry, or classic jewelry styles will work best with your wedding dress. Then consider the various elements of your wedding and then decide if the pieces you like will evoke the mood or look you want to create for your wedding.

First of all set the mood of your wedding. The style of your wedding can help narrow down your bridal jewelry choices. Important things to consider are whether you want a daytime ceremony or in the night. Do you wish to make it a grand affair or keep it limited to a small intimate gathering? Here are some popular options for different types of weddings along with the dress codes and jewelry ideas best suited to the occasion.

Beads can be strung together in any number of combinations to create different objects. Most of the times we create ornamental items like bracelets, earrings, and so on. Accomplished beaders are known to create highly complex bead items like multi-strand necklaces and complete ornament sets.

Glamorous weddings: With this you could get away with bolder, and perhaps glitzier, wedding jewelry and accessories at large, black-tie and the same would suit for night-time weddings.

Simple, elegant weddings: here a romantic lacy dress, simple jewelry styles and vintage jewelry pieces could work for you. Heart lockets or brooches can also help you create an antique feel. To create an elegant, timeless affair, look toward classic jewelry pieces such as strands of pearls and diamond earrings and create memories to last a lifetime.

Laid-back beach weddings: To keep the atmosphere light-hearted and full of fun, wear simple yet bright jewelry. A simple strand of pearls and some flowers in your hair can set the tone for an early afternoon ceremony on the beach.

Cultural weddings: In this case there may not be much to choose in terms of because different cultures have different traditions and customs that can guide your jewelry choices. For example, Irish brides may choose to wear a piece of jewelry featuring a Celtic knot or Claddaugh design. Similarly, Asian brides commonly wear jade, a symbol of good luck, health, and prosperity. Remember, your bridal jewelry can also compliment your wedding's color theme. For example, simple and understated bridal jewelry can offset bright, vibrant flowers, candles, and linens. On the other hand, an emerald necklace or ruby drop earrings can provide attractive contrast to single hues and neutral colors.

Compliment your gown with bridal jewelry

A pure white dress looks wonderful with primary color choices. If you plan to don white on the big day and feel like wearing blue sapphires or red rubies, you can surely do so. If you choose a simple dress, then big, bold jewelry, even colored gemstones, could look fabulous. When you select the type and length of your necklace and earrings, make sure they look good with the neckline of your dress.

With these tips in mind you can plan the dream wedding the memories of which you will cherish forever.

The Value And Importance Of Diamonds

Diamonds have grading certificates for a reason, for your protection and your diamonds protection as well. Accuracy is very important to the beauty and value of your gemstone. It's a good reason to remember the dates that your jewelry was bought or when it was given to you. Usually to go on with enhancing a stone, the clarity or inclusions have to be pretty visible. Thus, they drill holes into the flaws and bleach out the dark inclusions. This usually fills the holes or large inclusions that break the surface up with a compatible material.

The only problem is that this makes the diamond unstable, which means that it'll be difficult for someone to work on the ring. Also, it can't be cleaned in a real ultrasonic or steamed container. Diamonds are magnetic to oil and it needs to be heated to release the oil from the stone. There is no way to care for your diamond like a natural diamond. Find a nice GIA cert diamond SI 2 in clarity and F- G in color with a good make. Or, you can find an EGL SI1 EF as they are much more lenient in their grading.

Diamonds are so valuable because the price of anything is determined by supply and demand. There is a great demand for diamonds and the appearance of a short supply is maintained by DeBeers Consolidated.

The Seven major diamond mining countries of the world are: Botswana, Russia, South Africa, Angola, Namibia, Australia, and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Diamonds are also mined in these countries: Brazil, Guyana, Venezuela, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Central African Republic, Tanzania, China, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, and India.

Diamonds have been known since ancient times. They were originally used as a tool to carve other gems like lapis and carnelian.

Ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars that had fallen on earth. Some said that they were the tears of gods. Legend has it that there existed an inaccessible valley somewhere in Central Asia; a carpet of diamonds covered it. It was patrolled by prehistoric birds of prey and guarded by venomous snakes. However, the truth is that the exact origin of diamonds is still a mystery, to scientists and geologists.

Diamonds were formed as long ago as 3.5 billion years, under conditions of great heat and pressure, deep inside the earth. This correlates with the earliest stages of the development of our planet, estimated to be in the region of 4.5 billion years old.

Volcanic eruptions carried the diamonds to the surface of the earth millions of years ago. Diamonds are found in cone-shaped pipes of rock called kimberlitic. These pipes have been weathered and their diamonds dispersed by rivers to far-lying areas, such as coastlines. They should last for several million more years.

Prices for diamonds are determined for the most part by DeBeers Consolidated Mines which is the largest monopoly in the world. The prices are based on color, clarity, cutting proportions and carat weight.

The Four C's You Need To Know When Purchasing Your Diamond

Diamonds. If you are thinking of purchasing a diamond, you must check out the four criteria that diamonds are graded by, namely the color, cut, clarity and carat of the diamond.

A diamond with no color allows maximum light to pass through it, therefore this type of diamond is usually preferred for its sparkle. On the color grading scale, diamonds graded D, E, and F mean they have no color. G, H, and I diamonds have very little color. J, K, and L mean that the diamond is a slight yellow color. P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, and X diamonds have a darker shade of yellow. Diamonds graded Z has a color other than yellow or white and are the rarest and most expensive diamonds in the world. Generally, D-graded diamonds are the most valuable, and X the least.

The cut of the diamond refers to the shape it is cut into and also its reflective quality.

Diamonds are generally cut with 58 facets. The sparkle and brilliance of the diamond generally depends on its cut, its angles, its finish and its ability to reflect light. The most popular diamond cuts are heart, oval, marquise, princess, pear, trillion, round, and emerald. Common cutting problems include a diamond cut too thin that causes it to lose some of its sparkle, or a missing or off center culet.

The clarity refers to the diamond's internal and surface imperfections and blemishes. Diamonds that are clear are more brilliant; they are also quite rare and thus highly priced. These flawless diamonds have no internal or external imperfections or blemishes

The perfect diamond carries a grade of FL or IF, that is, Flawless or Internally Flawless. A diamond with a grade of I-1, I-2 or I-3 means that it is imperfect, with I-3 being the worst grade. VVS1 and VVS2 means that the diamond is very very slightly imperfect; VS1 and VS2 diamond is very slightly imperfect; and SI-1 and SI-2 means that the diamond is slightly imperfect.

The unit by which the weight of the diamond is measured by is called the carat. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. A carat is divided into 100 segments called points, with 150 points equal to one and a half carats.

When you purchase a diamond, you must purchase a diamond certificate also known as the Diamond Grading Report. This report is issued by the Gemological Institute of America otherwise known as GIA. With this diamond certificate, you can verify the diamond's color, cut, clarity and carat. You can buy a diamond with confidence from the diamond dealer as long as the certificate is GIA-issued and not from the dealer. Do not accept certificates from any other institute other than GIA, as GIA has been established as the most trustworthy and respectable.

Platinum - The Best Choice For Engagement And Wedding Rings

Rings.Anyone would think from the current fashion craze for platinum that this was a recently discovered metal. In fact, this is far from the truth. The Spaniards discovered Platinum in 1590, but disdained it because it looked like silver, rather than the yellow metal that they treasured. What the Spanish explorers failed to appreciate was that platinum is 34 times rarer than gold. Platinum only comes from meteorites. That's one reason for its scarcity.

Platinum is increasingly used in jewelry because it is more ductile than gold. It can be drawn into fine wire, enabling the craftsman to create more intricate designs than is possible with gold. The silvery color of platinum also sets off diamonds more attractively than gold.

Platinum is totally unreactive chemically, so it can never react with oxygen or hydrogen sulfide and tarnish. It will always stay shiny.

If you have an allergy to certain jewelry, consider switching to platinum, as if. Platinum jewelery contains no nickel, the metal that is mixed with gold that causes an allergic reaction. Being totally unreactive, platinum can never cause a rash or other allergic reaction. Platinum is used to make pacemakers because it is so well tolerated by the body.

Platinum has a multitude of far more important uses than jewelery. It is a catalyst. This means that platinum allows other chemicals, like gases, to react easily on its surface without affecting the platinum itself in any way. The platinum is not affected by the reaction at all. It is still there after the reaction to carry on working. Very useful.

The most well known example of platinum use in this way is in automobile exhaust catalysts. It is also used in making nitric oxide, which is essential to making nitric acid, one of the essential chemicals that our modern chemical industry depends on for making everything from drugs to explosives.

Buying A Wedding Ring? Avoid Classic Diamond Scams

Diamond,As you walk along on your quest for the perfect diamond for your mate, you hear, “Pssst! Hey mister, I hear you’re looking for some good rocks. I’ve got some great stones, really reasonably priced. I’ll even throw in the ring for free!”

Sounds shady? You bet he is! Of course, you wouldn’t really buy a diamond from a guy in an alley wearing a trench, right?

Bet you’d be amazed by how many scams are pulled and in broad daylight by jewelers who seem absolutely honest. Some of them even have beautiful shops that look really hi-tech. Beat them at their own game by learning their scams.

The bigger the better, a lot of people say. When a jeweler tells you that you have a five carat diamond ring, don’t get dazzled by the carats. If there was only one stone then you’d have no problem. You might actually be getting a 1 carat diamond surrounded by eight half-carat smaller pieces.

An honest jeweler will tell you the weight of each stone in the ring separate from the center diamond. In fact he’ll even give you a certificate from a reputed lab such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as proof. If he can’t or won’t do these, you’re better off buying from someone else.

Then there’s the bait and switch. The jewelry store will advertise a diamond at a great price. Problem is that when you get there, they’ll tell you that it’s already been sold and try to convince you to get another piece instead. Rarely is this case true. Usually there was never such a piece and they’ll show you something more expensive that they will try to get you to buy instead.

If the diamond that they announced for sale isn’t available, ask for another just like it. If they can’t produce another one of the same special quality and price, you are better off walking out the door. Don’t let them get your hard earned money.

Normally when you go to a jewelry shop, the gems are lying on a beautiful cloth bed under bright lights. The gems are so white and tempting. Hold it right there! Most diamonds really will look whiter especially under lights that give off a certain blue component. If you really want to check the color of a stone, check it in sunlight. If they refuse, refuse to purchase as well.

You were finally able to find the gem that symbolizes your love. You ask your jeweler t o know make it into a ring so that you can propose to your beloved. He said that you would have to leave it with him for a few weeks and he’ll call you when it’s ready.

When the ring arrives, it is beautiful but….something about it just doesn’t feel right. You can’t quite put your finger on it but this doesn’t seem to be the diamond that you bought. How can you tell?

The solution is simple: have the diamond checked by an independent gemologist certified by a group such as the GIA. Have them compare it to
the certificate of your diamond to confirm that it is a match. After all, no two diamonds are exactly the same. Then you’ll know and can demand proper action.

Bottom line, to avoid scams you should take the time to educate yourself about the basics of diamonds. Next you’ll need to find a jeweler or gemologist that you can truly trust. Lastly, always ensure that you are given the proper certificate for your gem, one issued by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or another reputed independent lab. These will save you a whole lot of money and avoid giving you headaches.

    Diamonds Are Forever

In October 2005, Egg asked the Social Issues Research Centre to investigate the trends that would define the “Noughties”. They found that many people thought of the period as the “Decade of Fear”, due to the immense media coverage of 9/11, the tsunami and the War on Terror. As a result, people are increasingly likely to stay at home, to indulge themselves and to demand everything on their own terms. One great way to combine all three is to treat yourself to gorgeous jewellery, ordered from the comfort of your own computer desk, and delivered straight to your door within days.

The big surprise for online jewellery retailers is that diamonds sell remarkably well through websites. The range available is incredible, with everyone from top-end specialists such as Blue Nile through to familiar high street names such as H.Samuel (http://www.hsamuel.co.uk ) selling diamond jewellery online. Consumers are now confident that buying online is secure, and the quality and design of websites makes the decision easy. For example, some jewellers’ sites feature zoom and 360 degree views of their products so you can see exactly what you’re getting. Blue Nile (http://www.bluenile.co.uk ) even offers an online design service – you can ‘build’ a diamond ring by choosing the stone shape, selecting the perfect band to complement it, and setting the budget.

    How to Wear Diamonds:

    Diamond Earrings
Diamond jewellery is more affordable than ever, so now is the time to buy something special. For true self-indulgence, treat yourself to a pair of diamond earrings to wear every day. There’s no point saving special jewellery for special occasions – if you buy something because you like it, then why not wear it? Diamond earrings come in all shapes and sizes, and the glittering stones are so versatile that you can wear them with anything. For adding discreet sparkle to any ensemble, a little pair of diamond studs is probably the safest option; however, there are some gorgeous drop and hoop earrings around that look fantastic with a strapless little black dress.

    Diamond Bracelets
Tennis bracelets are a favourite accessory, although they are possibly a little over the top for everyday wear. They have a classic appeal akin to that of pearls or solitaire rings, so are perfect 18th or 21st birthday presents. For something a little more subtle but just as stylish, try a delicate bangle in ultra-fashionable white gold, pavé-set with a sweep of gems. The beauty of diamond bangles and bracelets is that whenever you move your arm, at least one of the stones will catch the light, and sparkle in that magical way that diamonds have. If you are looking for a stunning accessory that won’t date over the decades, diamond bracelets are definitely worth a look.

    Diamond Rings
And finally we come to rings. Diamonds no longer have to be restricted to a timeless solitaire engagement ring. Confident, successful women are beginning to regard right-hand rings as the ultimate expression of self. Wearing a fashionable diamond dress ring to the office every day is a subtle statement, but it will definitely get you noticed at the boring weekly meeting. Make a statement with a “what, this old thing?” attitude to your diamonds.

    Diamond Watches
If you’re a bit strapped for cash, but can’t resist the appeal of the little sparklers, why not try a diamond-set watch? It’s far easier to justify to your other half than a dazzling diamond pendant, however gorgeous it may be, because you really need a watch anyway, don’t you?

    Diamond Celebrities
Catherine Zeta Jones is famed for her stellar ascent from Swansea mini-series girl to A list silver screen goddess. Her red carpet outfits always play to her strengths – she has a stunning, hourglass figure, and knows that sumptuous satiny gowns with structured bodices and flowing skirts look fab on her. Catherine accessorises with the kind of jewellery you’d expect from someone married to an elder statesman of Hollywood; old-fashioned jewellery, set with obscenely large diamonds.

Jennifer Lopez has a very different attitude to her rocks. Like Destiny’s Child, she buys her own. She may have once been Jenny from the block, but she is now queen of a multi-million dollar empire, which allows her to buy herself a new set of diamonds to perfectly accessorize each of her fabulous reinventions. J.Lo no longer has the stunning six carat pink diamond ring that Ben Affleck proposed with, so for her 36th birthday, she bought herself a gorgeously indulgent £2.5 million diamond-encrusted ring.

Guys would do well to take a leaf out of David Beckham’s book. He treated wife Victoria to a pink diamond even bigger than J.Lo’s, but he’s no stranger to bling himself. The London-born footballer has become an international style icon thanks to his sharp tailoring and immaculate grooming. David likes to wear a huge single stud earring, set with a sparkling square-cut diamond, with a sharp suit and no other jewellery. Herein lies the secret to men’s jewellery – one piece at a time is usually enough, especially if it’s diamond-set.

In recent years, ice has become the jewel of choice for rappers such as Fifty Cent, who choose it as a visible display of their wealth and success. The subject of conflict diamonds has hit the headlines of late, thanks to Kanye West’s “Diamonds from Sierra Leone”, which directly refers to the ongoing civil war in that country, financed by the sale of diamonds mined in the warzone. Jay-Z, another Roc-A-Fella artist known for his appetite for bling, is shown using a “diamond cutting” gesture on the front cover of his album “The Dynasty: Roc La Familia”. These rappers have now, rightly or wrongly, become role models, and to get the look of any of these hip-hop stars, a chunky, expensive diamond-encrusted crucifix is a good start.

Diamonds And What To Do With Them

Diamonds are allotropes of carbon , whose hardness and high dispersion of light make it useful for industrial applications and jewelry.

Diamond in Greek means "impossible to tame". Diamonds are found mainly in central and southern Africa, although significant sources of the mineral have been discovered in Canada, Russia, Brazil, and Australia.

There are Synthetic Diamonds and Natural Diamonds.

There is something so special about diamonds, and they are so valuable, that people have been trying to make them for a long time.

Synthetic diamonds were first produced in 1953, in Stockholm ,Sweden by ASEA ,Sweden's major electrical manufacturing company. Pressure was maintained within a device at an estimated 83,000 atmospheres for an hour to produce these diamonds.

It now seems that it is possible to make diamonds in a laboratory so perfect down to the same atomic structure that DeBeers, the world's largest diamond consortium, is running scared.

And you know what, these diamonds can be made and sold at a profit.

Apparently there are in Russia alone 5 laboratories producing synthetic diamonds that have the same atomic structure as natural diamonds but with ONE difference, they are too perfect.
They have the same characteristics as real diamonds, the same hardness, same conductivity, the same sparkle.

    Different types of Synthetic Diamonds:

2 different processes are being used to produce Synthetic Diamonds:

The oldest process uses pressure, lots of it, and carbon.

Since diamonds are carbon, eventually people were able to make diamonds in this manner, but these diamonds were easily distinguishable from natural diamonds.

Originally, the pressure process was developed by GE and, by major manufacturers, on a much larger scale.

There is also a cubic press system.

The newest process actually grows diamonds layer by layer as a chemical process and is called Chemical vapor deposition.

This process allows many new uses for diamonds which in the past had previously been either too expensive to implement or too difficult to make.

The most important characteristic of CVD diamond growth is the ability to control the properties of the diamond produced.

Diamonds are now being used to machine tools, especially for non-ferrous alloys. CVD diamond also has applications in electronics. Conductive diamond has been demonstrated as a useful electrode under many circumstances.

Diamonds are also being used as radiation detection devices. Diamonds also have uses as semiconductors because the diamonds can be contaminated with impurities.

Diamond is the ideal material. It can be used in computers to run them at speeds that would melt anything on the market today.

Diamonds can also replace rubies to make lasers of extreme power.

Diamonds can be used as memory storage devices which could be so small as to allow a cellphone to fit into a watch and an iPod to store 20,000 movies.

Choosing A Vintage Style Engagement Ring

Vintage style engagement rings are a popular choice for brides who love the romantic Victoria era or the ornate settings of antique design. Vintage style engagement rings can be true antiques or they can be modern creations fashioned after the old style rings of another era.

Finding a Vintage Style Engagement Ring

There are jewellery designers who will create a vintage style engagement ring for you from a new design. They may already have several on display or in their portfolio from which you can choose. However, if you want to find a genuine antique diamond ring, you can often find them at estate sales and auctions.

The Internet has made accessing estate sales and auctions from all around the world easily accessible to couples anywhere. You need to be careful of some online auctions and choose to deal only with the most well-known and reputable auction sites. You are dealing with an expensive item that could easily be represented as something it is not online. Good auction sites with authenticate it’s buyers and sellers and provide a means for users to rate and comment on the goods and services they have received.

If you find a vintage style setting at an auction or estate sale and don’t think the diamond is up the size or quality, it is easy enough to replace it with a new diamond of your choice. Since diamonds can be purchased as loose stones, separate from any setting, you don’t need to limit your purchase of a vintage style engagement ring simply because you don’t like the stone.

You don’t even need to limit yourself to rings that were previously engagement rings. You can choose any ring setting you like and turn it into your own custom engagement ring. Other jewellery works well for this idea too. Large vintage earrings can be fashioned into a ring, have a diamond set it them and then they instantly become one of the most beautiful vintage style engagement rings.

    Bridal Fashion Jewelry

Jewellery (spelled jewelry in American English) refers to ornamental devices worn by persons, typically made with gems and precious metals. Costume jewelry is made from less valuable materials. However, jewelry can and has been made out of almost every kind of material. Examples include bracelets, necklaces, rings, and earrings, as well as items like hair ornaments or body piercing jewelry. Jewelry, particularly when made with precious materials, is generally considered valuable and desirable. Some cultures have a practice of keeping large amounts of wealth stored in the form of jewelry. Jewelry can also be symbolic, as in the case of Christians wearing a crucifix in the form of jewelry, or, as is the case in many Western cultures, married people wearing a wedding ring. And what can symbolize love and, of course, the wedding ceremony more than a diamond?

And what can symbolize love and, of course, the wedding ceremony more than a diamond?

Diamonds are graded by four characteristics: cut, carat (weight), clarity, and color. All four of these properties determine how much a diamond is worth.

Cut - What is the proportion of the diamond? Round brilliant diamonds are commonly cut with 58 facets. The better proportioned these facets are on the diamond, the more light will be reflected back to the viewer's eye. This is extremely important. When cut properly, the diamond will sparkle more. Diamond cuts are measured by the table percentage, so always ask for it. Cut also refers to the shape such as: round, pear, and oval.

Carat - How big is the diamond? Larger diamonds often cost more per carat due to their size. There are 100 points to a carat. Hence a 50 point diamond is 1/2 a carat. (There are 5 carats to a gram.)

Clarity - How clear is the stone? Clarity ranges from flawless (perfect) to I (included). Here is a summary:

Color: Diamond colors generally range from D - X for white and yellow diamonds. D is the whitest. Around S they become "Fancy" yellow Diamonds. One can also find green, pink, red, blue and brown diamonds - though these are usually irradiated.

Diamonds are often treated. If you are concerned about getting true value for your money, know what you are getting. Be sure to read the fine print.

Diamonds with inclusions are sometimes filled with glass to make them appear clearer. An inclusion is an imperfection internal to the diamond. Filler can be damaged by heat, ultrasonic cleaning, and by re-tipping. The filling does not repair the inclusion, it just makes it less visible. They can be painted to offset a yellow tinge. The paint wears off rather quickly.

Finally, now that you have that precious stone, here are some tips as to how to take care of it. Diamonds are often thought to be unshatterable. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Diamonds are brittle: If you hit a diamond hard, they WILL crack or chip if mishandled. Don't wear your diamond when doing rough work.

Storage: Store diamonds separately. When stored with other jewelry, diamonds may scratch other jewelry (or each other).

Cleaning: The best method for cleaning is a jeweler's polishing cloth. Many jewelers will clean your diamond ring for free if you are making another purchase in the store.

The Tradition Of The Diamond Engagement Ring

Most little girls grow up dreaming of the moment that their knight in shining armor gets down on one knee and proposes. It is a romantic gesture that is topped off with the perfect accessory, the engagement ring. Most little girls dream of that perfect diamond atop their ring finger, gleaming and bright. The engagement ring has a very old and interesting history that began thousands of years ago. The traditional diamond engagement ring that we know of today is actually a fairly recent custom.

In most traditions in the Western world, an engagement ring is worn by a woman on the third (ring) finger of her left hand, signifying that she is engaged to be married. The ring is usually presented by a man upon a proposal of marriage, and worn by the woman after she accepts his proposal. It signifies the agreement to marry, and is usually worn along with the wedding band (on the same finger) for the duration of the woman's life or the marriage, whichever ends first.

The tradition of the engagement ring can be traced back as far as Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The Ancient Romans held the belief that the Vena Amoris (Latin for "vein of love") was located in the ring finger of the left hand. It was believed that this vein ran directly from the finger to the heart. The circle of the engagement ring was also believed to represent the eternal bond of love, a romantic notion that is still largely believed even today.

The design and material of the engagement ring has changed quite a bit through the years. While in ancient times an engagement band was fashioned out of hemp, rope, or even lead (in Ancient Rome) and usually did not contain gemstones, today we traditionally see engagement rings fashioned out of precious metals such as platinum or gold, holding a single set stone, which is most commonly a diamond.

The diamond engagement ring seems to be the most common and accepted piece of its type due to its permanence, beauty, and expense. It is a reflection of the love felt between two people. That is probably why it is expected that a man plunk down tons of money for an engagement ring. The cost of the ring is ultimately up to the individual, and how much he wants (or can afford) to spend. Some guidelines assert that 2-3 months salary should be shelled out for the ring. That amount of money can purchase quite a diamond engagement ring!

Diamond engagement rings most commonly come with solitaire settings, and come in a variety of diamond shapes, such as pear, round, princess, heart, marquis, and square. Each shape showcases the brilliance of a diamond in a different way, and adds to the individuality of the piece. More often, you will find that diamond engagement rings are set with more than one stone, and even side stones. This can mean more smaller diamonds, or more large diamonds, depending on the whim (and the credit line) of the man doing the buying!

It is however, becoming more and more common to see engagement rings that either contain another type of gemstone besides a diamond, or contain other colored gemstones with a diamond. You often see solitaire set emeralds, rubies, or sapphires, or any of these stones set with smaller surrounding diamonds. This represents the taste and individuality of the woman who wears the ring, and often makes for a quite unique and beautiful ring to wear.

The diamond engagement ring (or an engagement ring containing other precious gems) is a representation of a promise of eternal love and devotion. The possibilities in rings are endless, and should be chosen with care to reflect the woman's taste, style, and personality. After all, she will be wearing the ring for a very long time to come.

Buying Jewelry Online: How To Choose The Right Company

For anyone looking to purchase fine jewelry, online shopping can be a great way to find the right piece at the right price. There can be many advantages to buying fine jewelry online – with savings being one of the major factors. Reputable online jewelers usually have much lower overhead costs, and can pass those savings on to the consumer. Another advantage of buying fine jewelry online is convenience – you need travel no further than your computer to choose your jewelry and make your purchase. This being said, there are things you need to consider in order to make your fine jewelry purchase a positive experience.

    Choose a Jeweler You Trust
The first thing you need to do is find an online jewelry store that you can trust. You will have to do a little bit of detective work in order to eliminate the less desirable companies and end up with a list of jewelers that you feel confident doing business with.

Find out if the website is secure. The jeweler’s website should have 128bit SSL security. This is an absolute must when you are purchasing online, since you will most likely be using a credit card or supplying your bank account information. Somewhere along the line you will be supplying information about yourself, and the 128bit SSL security will ensure that no unauthorized party can get access to your information.

Also, any diamond you buy, whether it is online or from a store, should come with a diamond certificate. The Gemological Institute of America independently certifies diamonds providing information on a diamond’s characteristics such as color, clarity and size. This is your best way of knowing the quality of the diamond you are buying.

The Online Jewelry Store Should Provide Excellent Customer Service
This cannot be stressed strongly enough. Before you make a fine jewelry purchase from a website consider contacting the jeweler’s customer service department by email and by phone. When talking to a customer service representative, ask questions and pay close attention to the responses you receive. If the rep seems irritated with your questions or is spending the entire phone call trying to rush you into buying a product, consider that a “red flag”.

If you contact them by email, check to see how quickly they reply. It should take them no longer than 48 hours during the business week – within 24 hours is the ideal. Look for professionalism and a helpful attitude in their emails.

    The Website Should Be Informative
The jeweler’s website itself should have information on how to buy a quality diamond, the different types of precious metals, etc. They should have a wide variety of choices, and be able to help you find what is right for you. By providing you with information the company is helping you make an educated purchase.

    Look for Quality Craftsmanship
What the Internet can offer you is the chance to shop several stores without having to drive all over town; this allows you to choose a company whose fine jewelry shows attention to detail and craftsmanship.

The Return Policy Can Be Important
What if you receive the jewelry and are dissatisfied? Review the company’s return policy before you buy so you know what rights you have if you want to return your fine jewelry purchase.

See If They Offer Extra Perks
Things like free shipping add up to big savings. If the online jeweler is located outside of the state you are buying from you pay no sales tax. Free shipping combined with no sales tax can make a big difference in your bottom line. Some companies offer a discount on your next purchase. This can also save you big money. If a company is offering these or other incentives, they will likely have this information throughout the site and in their shopping cart.

Your Jewelry Purchase Should Provide Good Value for the Money
When buying fine jewelry, you are getting a piece that will last a lifetime and become a family heirloom. Look for fine jewelry that offers the best value which is not only determined by how much the jewelry costs but by the quality of the piece and the materials used.

Online jewelry shopping offers convenience, selection and value. Consider the factors above when making your next fine jewelry purchase so you find the online jeweler that is right for you.

What Jewelry Should You Wear To Your Wedding?

Ever since time immemorial, brides have always relied on accents to highlight their glow and beauty on their special day. The first stop for this is your jewelry. But how do you choose?

First, consider is your gown and your wedding motif.

A simple gown merits an elaborate jewelry design heighten the accent. High necks can provide the perfect backdrop for large gems serving as a lavaliere (a pendant on a necklace). A low-cut neck makes way for a multi-layer arrangement of gems or pearls.

As the bride, you can wear the more elaborate earrings, if you so prefer. Gems can hang on chandelier earrings, especially if you have a long-ish face. Studs serve to frame the face – circles for round faces, squares for long faces.

For your wrist, a bracelet over your glove will do wonders. You can opt to wear a watch though this is not a traditional wedding accessory. If you absolutely need to be abreast of the time, bring a mobile phone in your little bridal purse. This will also help keep you on top of everything.

If your veil requires a headpiece, discuss this with your hair designer. A tiara can be a wonderful accent, though a floral arrangement can be a refreshing alternative. In some cases, a combination of the two would be perfect. In any case, let the expert advise you on this.

The color depends on your preference but there are traditional choices – pearls and diamonds. In recent years, gems have gained more popularity to serve as a consistent thread among the jewelry of the bride and the entourage. The color motif helps guide which stones to use – sapphires and lapis lazulis for blue, gold and amber for yellow and orange, emeralds and jades for greens, amethyst for pinks and purples, and others.

Second, make sure that your pieces match in some way. You don’t need to buy an entire set, especially if you have an heirloom you can use. Get pieces that have aspects similar to what you have – color, cut, type of gem, design, etc.

The more subdued versions will do for the ladies of the entourage, especially the flower girls.

Lasty, turn your attention to the men – especially your groom! You’d be amazed at the accessories they use.

The most essential of the lot are the cufflinks. If these can be in the same motif as your jewelry, it would be great. But remember that most people prefer to be able to use expensive pieces more than once. It is important to consider also what he likes.

Another essential piece in his look is the tie pin. This should also be consistent with his cufflinks. Optional pieces include collar pins, dress watches or chain watches.

For the completely consistent jewelry for you and your entire entourage, you can customize the design. This will save you hours poring over glass cases and catalogues but it can be expensive. So, consider this well.

At the end of the day, as the bride, it is your decision - your choices, your budget and your jewelry. Be open to those who can help you – you can use all the help you can get! It all boils down to you – no matter what you wear, you are the radiant bride whose smile gives the best sparkle of all.

White gold goes with platinum or silver and it coordinates with or most fabrics; platinum is a hard metal which makes it very durable for the couples long lasting love.

As more men celebrate their marriage by the wearing of a wedding ring, mens diamond rings are fast becoming the new mens fashion. Titanium is creating a new look and setting new standards as the classiest materials used in rings, many men are turning to this type of metal. Titanium is setting a standard in the looks of contemporary mens wedding bands.

When planning for a wedding something to consider is the purchase of the wedding rings since wedding usually go over budget it would be a good idea to set a budget and follow a plan when planning the wedding. As the wedding approaches and time seems to move quicker trying to find the ring that is right for you and for the price that you can afford will be one the stressful factors you will need to deal with. The style, color will effect the price of the ring while the size and width of the ring band will normally not have an effect on the price of the ring

Precious Fashion: Jewellery Today And Forever

All most well-known jewellery-houses are introduced in every largest contemporary world’s capital, and their number is still increasing. Celebrities and movie-stars, who regularly appear in the news, promote not at all their new song-albums or most-distributed movies, but on the contrary just another jewellery collection.

Undoubtedly, the cost of such beauty is high. However, when purchasing gold or silver ware from the last ultra-stylish collection, one may be sure to get a «friend» for ages. The jewellery world has its own view upon fashion. Neither diamonds, sapphires nor emeralds have time limits. The same with goods, made of these precious stones: they don’t ever wear out or go out of fashion, but just the reverse – become more unique, expensive each year and always maintain in requisition. At the same time even the most conservative jewellers from time to time phase in fresh ideas into their classic collections’ design. Our task is to catch them!

Let’s begin our review, certainly, with gold. Epidemic demand for white gold, which was on its way for the last few years, is gradually diminishing. According to Baselworld’s – Watch and Jewellery Saloon – survey results, the most fashionable precious metal is pink gold. This Saloon holds its collections’ demonstrations in Switzerland annually in spring. And almost all jewellery brands presented their new collections, which are carried out just in pink, at the last showing. But there’s no reason for conservatives’ agitation – both yellow and white gold are still in great demand, as they always successfully group with diamonds and emphasize on stones’ charm. Moreover they excellently go together and make a good combination with colorful precious and semiprecious stones. Keen on bright colors and anxious for something unusual? Then Korloff offers unique technology especially for you: varnishing gold with specific colorful lacquer. 14 colors, included in the collection, always allow you to select particularly your hue.

Leading positions among precious stones three centuries ago took diamonds. And they still do! In addition to that their colored variations are back in fashion: yellow (Roberto Coin), blue and even black (such jewellery-houses as Iosi Scavia, Luca Carati, Stephan Haffner and de Grisogono use them in their production). Though the majority of customers continue to opt for classic, limpid stones.

As for combination of diamonds with other precious stones, there is a wide range of variations. Most collections could be fairly called conservative, designed for luxurious evening dresses. And in this case, as far as jewelers are concerned, semiprecious stones are not appropriate and, certainly, are inferior to diamonds and sapphires. An unbelievable palette of hues was enabled in one of the last collections of Bvlgari High Jewellery: colors varied from blue with blueness, pink with gently-pink and green to yellow and purple. Yet in comparison with the previous collection – Allegra, where we have already seen such palette, but with the use of absolutely different stones (tourmalines, topazes, quartzes and amethysts), this presented collection is marked with colors combinations of only one precious stone – sapphire. At the jewellery-house Korloff mostly «Royal» materials are used in making their works: designers insist, the design itself is so unique that there is no sense in making it cheaper by the utilization of semiprecious stones.

At the same time many brands, de Grisogono for instance, do not avoid and approve of semiprecious stones’ use and offer various combinations of turquoise, corrals with sapphires and diamonds. Pearls incrusted with diamonds have also reached fashionable pike. One may as well easily find stylish and not so glaringly luxurious furnishings: topaz, amethyst, tourmaline and aquamarine were also added to the list of the most present-day semiprecious stones.

Talking about shape, furnishings are mainly massive and large in size. As concerns pendants, these are round and flat medallions, more than 2 inches in diameter with a huge stone mounting (Di Modolo Milano, Korloff). They perfectly decorate low-cut décolleté – so fashionable this season. Earrings are also big, long with fanciful pendants, and seal-rings are beautified with large bright stones or small diamonds’ placer.

The tendency of using conventionalized images of animate nature and abiocoen still continues to develop. The freedom for imagination is unlimited! A great variation of furnishings, rings and earrings, moulded in the shapes of cherries, oranges, melons, watermelons and even egg-plants, is presented in the Fruit collection de Grisogono. All these are made of semiprecious stones and diamonds and look very tasty and dressy.

A chain of footprints is a basic motive of the new Pasquale Bruni collection – Orme. It contains rings and pendants in the foot-shape. Magnificent diamonds light up cascades of blossomed out white flowers in Ghirlanda romantic furnishings of the same brand. Bvlgari also keeps up the flower theme in the collection Sapphire Flower, the main image of which is a flower with 5 sapphire petals and a small diamond in the middle.

Cartier in his works continues to develop animalistic trend in the jewellers’ art. Last year he brought to life the next series of his traditional panthers – La Panthere de Cartier. However, the most present-day furnishings are introduced in the shape of intricate twisted net – «lace» – where one with a touch of vivid imagination can see silhouettes of different animals and birds. (Tiffany & Co, Korloff).

In spite of fresh ideas and innovations, the jewellers’ art fashion is also shown in a wide variety of stones’ cuttings. All methods are far from being new; it is the fact, that just some of them were not used very often. One of the last Bvlgari collections – Rosette made of colored sapphires – received its name from the means of precious stones’ cuttings. Cutting in the shape of «rose» is one the most ancient methodics of stones’ cut. It allows collecting great number of stones into unlimited quantity of fanciful combinations and making unbelievable effect of kaleidoscope. Chopard introduced a very woman-like collection Copacabana, almost all the stones in which have the most present-day cutting «briolette». Korloff offers a unique cutting «Korloff cut» of 65 facets, for which he owns a patent. This method adds miraculous shine to diamonds, which are not very attractive stones in the first place: stones start to blaze thanks to gradual increase in facets’ size and reflection’s flatness.

On the whole, let alone total conservatism in the world of jewellers’ art, fashion offers us many furnishings’ variations this season. It is interesting, that nowadays’ trends repeat fashionable tendencies of the last century: same heavy brooches, pendants, necklaces, decorated with butterflies, dragonflies and flowers. In the long run it proves again, that jewellery is not going out of fashion!

    The Value Of Diamonds

The hardest substance on earth, diamonds are universally admired for their clarity and sophistication. If you want to crack her heart open to you, you could do worse than diamond jewelry.

Diamond encrusted jewelry carries all kinds of symbolic statements. The symbols range from commitment to a person to the willingness to spend some money on them. After all, diamonds are not cheap.

A commitment to another person is…well, a commitment. A person is looking for a commitment of time and totality. Diamonds are symbols for both of these things because of their nature.

If you are looking for symbol of something nearly unbreakable, it is the diamond. Formed solely form carbon, the average diamond is one of the hardest substances in the world.

To understand diamonds, you have to first understand carbon. It is the building block of practically everything on the planet. In its pure form, it is not clear or hard.

Diamonds are made entirely of carbon, but only under the right circumstances. This occurs deep in the crust of the planet when carbon is exposed to massive heat and pressure. After millions of years, it forms a hard, clear material.

Diamonds get their name from the Greeks. It seems the Greeks named everything some times! In this case, the name comes from the word “adamas”, which means unconquerable.

If diamonds are formed in the crust of the planet, how do we find them? Well, we mine for them, but no mine is deep enough to reach them. Instead, we focus on volcanic areas where diamonds have been pushed up to the surface in lava flows and explosions.

As you have probably gathered by now, the age of diamonds is measured over millennia. Most diamonds we find are billions of years old. Yes, that is billions with a B.

Diamonds can be very hard to find, which makes them precious. Most diamonds we find, however, cannot be used for jewelry. This makes the 20 percent that can even more precious.

On the human scale, diamonds have not been used as jewelry for as long as you might think. Although royalty is noted to have diamond encrusted things, the first diamond ring on record was only given in 1477. Given their age, that isn’t long ago.

The vary nature of diamonds is what gives them value. The age associated with them is incredible. Throw in the fact they are nearly impossible to break and you have the perfect gem for jewelry. An unbreakable commitment of time

    Basic Information About Diamonds

Diamonds have an allure about them that make them probably the most sought after gemstones in the world. They say that "diamonds are a girl's best friend", and more than likely that sentiment is due to their brilliance, their sparkle, and the way they make a person feel when wearing one. But, what we know as these perfectly clear and beautiful gemstones start their lives as basically rocks. They have to be mined and honed and crafted into what we know as diamonds.

A diamond is a form of carbon, and its extreme hardness and light diffusion qualities make it a highly useful stone for industrial purposes, in addition to its pleasing aesthetic qualities. Diamonds make excellent abrasives because they can only be scratched by other diamonds. Therefore, they are extremely durable and retain their brilliant gleam wonderfully.

The earliest known reference to the diamond comes from a Sanskrit text dating back to approximately 296 BCE (before the Christian Era), which described the diamond's qualities. It is generally accepted that diamonds were first mined in India, where they quickly became symbols of spirituality and holiness, decorating religious idols. Early on in their history, diamonds were traded in all direction of India for their different industrial uses, including engraving and drilling, as well as for their aesthetic purposes such as for ceremony, decoration, and adornment.

There was a strict prohibition against cutting diamonds. This taboo was started with the early traditional uses in India, and ended in the Middle Ages. By 1375, a guild of diamond cutters and polishers was established, as the technology of reshaping diamonds began to develop. The different shapes that were developed through the years only worked to exemplify the diamond's beauty and brilliance, increasing their allure. Today, diamonds are most familiarly used for the purposes of adornments, such as for jewelry.

There are 4 characteristics that are used as basic description devices of diamonds, and which are used in order to determine the ultimate value of a particular diamond. These are known as the "4 C's", or carat, clarity, color, and cut. The carat is the weight that measures the mass of the diamond. One carat equals approximately 0.007 ounce. The value of a diamond increases greatly relative to its carat weight, because large diamonds are exceptional and in high demand for jewelry.

The clarity of a diamond measures the amount of inclusions of a diamond, or its internal flaws. Foreign matter inside the diamond or cracks causing a cloudy appearance are considered inclusions, and tend to decrease the value of a diamond. There grading systems used to assess clarity, based on certain factors including number, size, color, and visibility of the inclusions (diamonds are usually graded from flawless to imperfect). The higher the clarity rating is, the more rare the diamond (and the more valuable) is.

The color of a structurally perfect diamond, and one that is free of chemicals is almost perfectly clear, and color-free to the naked eye. This doesn't necessarily affect the value of a diamond, however. Some pink or blue diamonds (like the Hope Diamond, for example) are considered spectacular, and therefore highly valuable. A rating system of D to Z (D=colorless and Z=bright yellow) is in use to aid in color assessment of diamonds.

The cut of a diamond describes how the diamond has been shaped and polished from its original mined state. The "cut" describes the level of workmanship that has gone into the diamond, as well as the angles to which the diamond is cut. This is not the same as the shape of the diamond, which describes just that, its shape. Shapes such as pear, round, marquis, princess are all familiar terms for diamond jewelry. When shopping for diamond jewelry, fine jewelry stores will be aware of the 4 C's of the diamond they carry, and will be able to provide information about which gems you are interested in. Diamonds are unique, and they are the ultimate souvenirs from the Earth, which adds even more allure to owning one.

Men- How To Buy Diamond Jewelry For Your Loved Ones

The large range of diamond jewelry often makes it very difficult for men to decide what type of jewelry to purchase for their loved ones.

Diamonds symbolize love, commitment and friendship, which makes it hard to choose the right piece of jewelry from the large variety of Diamond rings, Diamond earrings, Diamond pendants, Diamond necklaces, Diamond bracelets and of course Loose diamonds- which are always perfect since they can be set in any type of jewelry.

We can’t choose the perfect diamond jewelry for you but we can help you with 5 easy steps:

Step 1- Knowing what she likes:

Narrow down the type of jewelry she likes to wear by observing the jewelry she wears in general, and on different occasions.
The jewelry she wears may vary.
For example, her daytime jewelry may be different from the jewelry she wears when she goes out or to formal occasions.

Step 2- Knowing the color and size of the jewelry she wears:

Now that you have noticed the type of jewelry that she likes, it’s time to look closely at the details of her jewelry style.
The first thing you should check is if she likes White gold, Yellow gold or Rose gold.
You should also check if she prefers conservative or flashy jewelry.
For example, her earrings. Are they small and conservative like studs or are the big and detailed like chandelier or hoop earrings.

Step 3- Knowing her ring size (if you are buying a ring):

Knowing her ring size makes her ring perfect for many reasons, one of which is the fact that she can wear her ring right away.
Another reason is saving the hassle of having the ring resized.

    Step 4- Learning about diamonds:

Learning about diamonds will help you choose and understand the quality and prices of diamonds.
Learning about the Four C’s will help you understand- Color, Clarity, Carat and Cut, and choose the perfect diamond.

    Step 5- Begin shopping:

Now you have an idea for her perfect gift and you can start shopping. We recommend looking online at diamond jewelry websites.

    Don’t forget!
Buying diamond jewelry is an investment.
Now that you are educated in diamond jewelry, you can finally give her the perfect gift.

    Good luck !!

Choosing A Diamond With 4 Cs

Diamonds – girls’ best friend! Why do girls love diamonds? Why are they so precious? Is it because of their beauty and exquisiteness? Talk about buying. Purchasing a diamond can test the nerves of even the most astute buyer - what do you look for? What do the terms mean? What makes one diamond worth more than another?

When you get in the diamond shop and attempt to buy one, but do not know what the different between this one and that one. Even though those two have the same size and carat, the price can be completely different. Why? Here is a simple guide to the essentials of diamond grading.

Understanding these terms will help you discuss with the dealer the features most important to you, ensuring you get the very best diamond for your money. Diamond appraisers look for four qualities in a diamond when discerning its value. Commonly called the '4 Cs' they are: Cut, Clarity, Carat and Color.

    CUT

There are 2 big aspects of CUT.

    1. Quality of cut - affecting the brilliance of the diamond - the other refers to the actual shape of the diamond.

    2. Shape - Diamonds are available in many shapes. Some of the more common are; round, oval, pear (teardrop shaped), heart, princess (square shaped), Emerald (rectangular shaped), marquise (football shaped) and round. Of all the shapes available, round diamonds are the shape most capable of being cut to exude the greatest brilliance. The brilliance is determined by the ability of the diamond to reflect light. A quality cut diamond will have facets angled to reflect the greatest amount of light. Beware of diamonds cut to maintain a higher carat weight while sacrificing the cutting of a good angle as this will dramatically reduce the brilliance.

    CLARITY

Diamonds from natural sources are subject to individual flaws including trace minerals and scratches. A diamond without such characteristics is called flawless and is the rarest kind. While these flaws are often not visible to the naked eye, they affect the light reflecting qualities of the diamond which affects the overall brilliance.

    Diamond clarity is classified as follows: Flawless, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, SI3, I1, I2 and I3.

    CARAT

Carat is the measurement of the weight of a diamond. One carat may also be referred to as '100 points'. This means that a half carat would be listed as '50 points' and so on.

The larger a diamond is the more costly it becomes. Since the larger diamonds are much rarer the cost will go up significantly with each increase in size. A one carat diamond will be more than just double the cost of a half carat, however, a ring with multiple diamonds that have a combined weight of one carat will be cheaper than a single stone of that weight.

    COLOR

There are many diamond colors which called fancy diamonds. But the mostly found diamonds will be rated on an alphabetical scale from D to Z. A typical 'white' diamond should be as colorless as possible - a rating of 'D' being the rarest and most desirable. When choosing a colorless diamond it is best to stay within the D-J range or the diamond will have a yellow cast which lessens the value. The less natural color the diamond has the more colors will appear in the flashes reflected in the prism.

'Fancy' diamonds (diamonds with a rating over Z) come in a variety of shades and include some famous diamonds such as the Blue Hope diamond.

When decide to buy a diamond, please keep in mind of these 4 Cs as a factor of buying consideration. It takes years to gain a specialty in this area. Therefore, at least you should point out whether which features are of greatest importance to you and with a little knowledge select the diamond that will hold the greatest value and sentiment for your budget.
